This past July, state legislators designated November 14th as Diabetes Awareness Day.
State Representative Darlene Senger recently partnered with Edward Hospital and BP Global and offered free screenings for employees.
A simple finger prick can determine your sugar level, which is something you can correct if caught early.
“This is a disease that can be very crippling if not caught,” said Senger. “This is a simple thing just to find out ahead of time and then you know you’re good.”
“One in three Americans will actually suffer from diabetes by 2050 if we don’t do something about this,” said Cynthia Manfredi, Medical Director for BP Naperville, Cantera, Chicagoland.
It’s estimated that more than 800,000 Illinois residents have been diagnosed with diabetes and more than 500,000 more are unaware they have the disease.
