Navistar said it will locate its world headquarters to Lisle at the former Lucent-Alcatel facility. The heavy truck maker is investing $110 million into its new complex, and will bring more than 2,500 jobs to DuPage County as a result of the move.
“My mom once told me anything that is this good is difficult, you have to work at it,” said Dan Ustian, Navistar Chairman and Chief Executive. “All of you in this room know there is plenty of work that went on to make it work.”
Four months after walking away from the negotiations to relocate Navistar, it looks like the effort to bring the company to DuPage County paid off.
“They wanted to locate here in Lisle, and so I reached out with the able assistance of the people in Lisle,” said Attorney General Lisa Madigan. “We reached out to the residents and what their concerns were. Their concerns were pollution and noise. Hearing each other working on their differences, here we are today standing here united. Navistar, welcome to Illinois.”
Regional city leaders used bonding authority for the project that gave Navistar nearly $12 million in stimulus money as part of a larger $65 million incentive package. Naperville Councilman Kenn Miller thinks it is a win/win.
“It didn’t cost the city anything,” sand Miller. “We will actually make $15,000 on the transaction, and it will not cost the taxpayers any money. It’s federal money that we could have assigned to the Navistar project. They are pleased with that because it helped them get relocated to Lisle.”
With Illinois’ unemployment rate hovering around 10%, job creation is a top priority. The Navistar deal moves 1,400 employees from their current location in Warrenville and creates another 1,000 jobs.
“When you talk about 800 engineering jobs, you’re talking high paying jobs,” said Mike Connelly, State Representative for the 48th District. “Jobs bring families who buy stuff. This is really an economic boost into this region.”
“The community came to us and said, ‘Come on, we want you here,’ and it kept going and going,” said Ustian. “I can’t tell you how that feels to stand up here and to feel so welcome by the community.”
Navistar plans to move to the new Lisle facility in about nine months.
