For ten years a group of ladies have gotten together to go to the Naperville Garden Club’s Cup of Cheer House Walk and Holiday Market. But these ladies don’t drive around from house to house, they rent the Naperville trolley to take them around.
“We did it every year, went on the Cup of Cheer Walk and we’d stop for lunch, have a glass of wine and think it’d be really nice if we had someone to drive us,” said Terri Stevens, one of the organizers.
They began calling themselves the “Trolley Babes,” a name that’s stuck with them through the past ten years. The ladies make a day out of it, starting with breakfast at one of their houses before boarding the trolley to visit the homes decorated by the Garden Club.
Between each stop they have drinks and snacks. They also make time to go shopping and pick up decorations for their own homes and some gifts for others.
“We have a great time,” said Jeri Hansen. “It’s just a lot of fun.”
And the ladies aren’t the only ones having a good time. For Trolley Chick Annette Wehrli, Cup of Cheer is one of her favorite working days of the year.
“I started doing this about three years ago,” said Wehrli. “My father used to do it. My brother’s done it. It’s my turn now but I’m ready to pass it on to another brother and join the ladies.”
These ladies think of everything. They even have lunch catered onto the trolley halfway through the day.”
“We’ve kind of got it all down to a science,” said Ellen Coakley. “We know what to bring, we know how to walk when the trolley’s moving.”
For many women, one of the best parts of the day is seeing how other walkers react to the trolley pulling up.
“People who have been on the Cup of Cheer tour for a few years know that when the trolley stops, 30 women are going to be getting off so it’s fun to watch them,” said Karen Guerra.
“They kind of scram to get in line before us which is kind of fun,” said Laura Hernandez.
Inspired by how much fun the Trolley Babes had each year, Cup of Cheer planners now offer their own trolley rides.
“We have now partnered with Naperville Trolley so that Naperville Trolley will set up a Cup of Cheer tour where they will do all the driving to the homes,” said Diane Greenawalt, Co-Chair of Cup of Cheer.
But for the Trolley Babes, it’s more than just riding around on a trolley. It’s a day to create lasting memories of the fun times they’ve had.
“There’s a lot of special touches that the group who organizes it puts together for us,” said Laura Hernandez.
Through the years the women have had changes in their lives.
“Now we’ve had our first grandbaby, Pam had a grandson,” said Terri Stevens. “Ellen’s daughter just got engaged. So it’s like we’ve just all grown up.”
But on thing’s remained the same to the Trolley Babes; Cup of Cheer is like Christmas morning.
