Cup of Cheer Preview

Judy Kriedler has a passion for decorating houses, and for the past 10 years she has lent her talents to the Naperville Garden Club’s Cup of Cheer Holiday House Walk. She is always challenging herself to stay on trend.

“I feel as House Chairman I have a responsibility to give the public something different every year,” said Kriedler. “Because I know they don’t want to see the same things every year. I’m always looking for new ideas and new products and things we can incorporate into the homes.”

For 52 years the Garden Club has hosted their Cup of Cheer event. For the house walk portion four homeowners volunteer to have their houses decorated for the holidays by members of the organization.

The homes are then on display to the public during Cup of Cheer.

“It is a tradition that so many people look forward to,” said Naperville Garden Club President, Marilyn Krueger. “I think our house chairs and the ladies that work in our holiday market are always coming up with new ideas. Hopefully everyone can take home an idea they can actually try and use in their own homes.”

For the overall design, Garden Club volunteers make sure to successfully use the homeowner’s decorations as well as the items they bring in themselves.

“We do respect that most families have holiday traditions,” said Krueger. “We will then just try to take some of their ornaments and maybe tweak them a little bit.”

“You live in your house all the time and you don’t really see it anymore,” said Marybeth Bauer, the owner of a featured home. “So you get to see it fresh.”

Personalized touches can be found throughout the homes, representing the families that live there.

After the event, the homeowners are able to keep all the decorations for the future and the volunteers are on to planning for the next year.

I start shopping now for next year,” said Kriedler. “I’ve already been working on an idea for a main Christmas tree for next year!”

When the final touches are made the Garden Club and the homeowners will open their doors on December 7th to fellow Naperville residents.
