A trip to Chicago and a similar food tour was the inspiration for Mike Wyrostek to create a tour right here in Naperville. His creation, Naperville Bites and Sites, combines food and history for an afternoon of fun.
“I definitely love to eat, love to talk, love to walk, love history,” said Wyrostek.
Taking everything he loves, Wyrostek made a three hour, two-mile walking tour through Naperville’s Historic District and to some of its unique eateries.
“You’re trying to make a balance with the food and the history and that’s the hardest thing,” said Wyrostek.
Kreger’s Central Foods is just one of the six to seven venues visited during the tour. Kreger’s, known for its famous homemade brats, has been in business since 1893.
“My favorite part was probably the meat market,” said Naperville resident Scott Vollmer. “I’m polish, I like polish sausage, so that really hit the spot.”
Giordano’s deep dish pizza, Cookie Dough Creation’s ice cream, and the Olive Tap’s original oils are just a few of the other stops on the tour.
“Well of course I like food, and I like history so it’s a good combination and it was nice exercise too,” said Lemont resident, Kathy Collins.
Besides great exercise, Wyrostek introduced the Century Walk, walked by famous historical homes, and even shared the story of the 1946 train wreck.
“I never knew that one of the biggest train wrecks in the country happened here in Naperville, so that was an interesting fact to learn,” said Vollmer.
