Residents, hungry to make a difference, gathered at Navistar recently for the 11th Annual Cuisine for a Cause event, one of the largest yearly fundraisers benefiting Naperville CARES. The not-for-profit provides short-term monetary support and resources to residents in financial crisis.
“We pay things like, rent and utilities to keep people housed,” said Janet Derrick, Executive Director of Naperville CARES.
This year’s event moved from its previous location at Tellabs, down the street to Navistar. Guests could walk around and sample a ‘Taste of Naperville’ with more than 20 local vendors serving food, beer, and wine.
Many restaurants, including Walker’s Charhouse, donated extra time and food for the cause.
“Our head chef brought a friend of his to work extra hours. He wanted to help out the community,” said Bryan Werschulz, Owner of Walker’s Charhouse. “He was nice enough to help us put things together on a busy Saturday night.”
Attendees could bid on various silent auction items, with 100% of the proceeds going to Naperville CARES.
This year CARES hopes to raise over $100,000, all to help local residents who are struggling financially.
“I think there are so many people that could use that hand and a kind word when they are struggling financially,” said Derrick. “I think it’s important that we do that in our community.”
Naperville CARES will celebrate 15 years of helping their fellow residents later this year.
