Crime is on the rise in the areas of burglaries, car thefts and aggravated assaults.
From January to May of 2017, Naperville saw 51 burglaries compared to 46 at the same time last year. For the same time, car thefts have also risen – currently at 19, up from 14 at this time last year.
And aggravated assaults are also on the rise, with a jump from 12 from January through May of 2016 to 34 so far this year.
While the numbers have increased, Naperville Police Commander Lou Cammiso says not to panic.
“When you look at the four month period of time it’s really a short time to make generalizations on is crime up or down. Generally we look at at least a year period of time or even three to five years to get true crime trends,” said Cammiso.
Cammiso says the spike in these first few months of the year could be due to the mild winter we experienced.
Crime numbers have decreased in the areas of general thefts and traffic crashes for this time.
