M/I Homes’ proposal to build more townhomes isn’t demolished yet.
Though they were denied last month by the Planning and Zoning Commission to rezone a property east of Route 59 and north of Audrey Lane from business to residential, at their latest meeting, city council members voted six to two to direct staff to conduct more studies.
M/I homes wants to add 138 additional townhomes to their Mayfair community.
“All this commercial property came to that area, to that intersection at Route 59 and 75th Street, and yet nothing developed here. Why? Because it’s not commercial property in my opinion, it’s residential,” said Grant Wehrli, City Councilman.
Staff will present their findings at the August 20th meeting.
At the same meeting, council unanimously approved the final tax incentive for an Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center at Freedom Plaza.
The package includes a nearly $7.5 million tax incentive and up to $500,000 in rebates for shopping local during construction.
Construction on the 13-acre development off Diehl Road and I-88, consisting of a 168-room Embassy Suites Hotel, a 13,000 square foot ballroom, and four freestanding restaurants begins in August.
The agreement lasts for 20 years after they open or until the $7.472 million limit is met, whichever happens first.
Council members also talked about a change in the city’s recycling program, which would require residents to use rolling flip-top carts as opposed to the current blue rectangular bins.
The change would cost about $2.3 million, costing residents about four dollars more a month for a year.
The discussion was tabled and will be brought up again at a future meeting.
