Council Gives Grants

As part of the annual budget process, the city allocates money to local not-for-profit social service agencies who are looking for funds for their community programs.

This year 33 applications were submitted- requesting about $945,000 through the grant program.

Initially Council and staff proposed funding 26 of those projects for a total of $450,000, making the tough decision to turn away certain groups.

“There’s not a harder role that you have to take then this, and the older I get, the more of these services that touch not just me, but people that I know, and I know that they do wonderful work. Infact, I can’t think of one group that hasn’t impacted the lives of my family or me,” said Councilman Kevin Gallaher.

But after several social services agencies spoke of their needs for the money at the meeting, council agreed to cut the $50,000 held in reserves for emergencies in half, and to reward another $25,000 to the groups.

“I do understand when we have so many groups that are demonstrating a need, today and you’re holding back $25,000, what makes one issue less important than another?” said Steve Chirico, Mayor of Naperville.

Council will decide what groups they want the extra money to go toward and will bring back their proposals early next year.

Council also decided to allocate $410,000 for the community development block grant, which helps fund organizations that work toward enhancing the community.
