Political activists were fired up as they listened to a leader in the Move to Amend campaign. David Cobb gave a presentation on the idea of corporate personhood at North Central College.
The discussion focused on how corporations are constructed and why giving them rights does not fit into the constitutional framework of the United States. “The five of us are going to tell all of you that even though the word corporation is never used in the constitution we now instruct you that you must treat the corporation as if its a person with rights and that perverts the whole thing,” says Cobb.
Move to Amend is a national coalition of more than 230,000 people and organizations working to amend the constitution.
Their proposed amendment has three parts. First, the rights protected by the constitution of the United States are the rights of natural persons only. Second, money is not free speech, so corporate donations to political activities should be regulated. And last, nothing in the amendment will abridge the freedom of the press.
Move to Amend works in DuPage County and Naperville to support adding referendums to the ballots asking residents if they would support restricting corporate personhood.
