College of DuPage Can’t Move Forward with Business

The College of DuPage Board of Trustees continues to disagree as only three of the six board members showed up to their latest meeting for the second time in a row.

Newly elected trustees Frank Napolitano, Charles Bernstein and acting Vice Chairman Deanne Mazzochi were the only to show at a special meeting called by themselves at the college.

Longtime trustees Erin Birt, Dianne McGuire and Joseph Wozniak set their own meeting and competing agenda to begin at a later time, but never showed- leaving Vice Chair Mazzochi to explain.

“I asked trustees Birt and McGuire to come to an agenda planning meeting, Dr. Collins asked them to attend one; we also asked Trustee McGuire whether she would agree to add some items on the initial agenda that she submitted and move things around and she declined,” said Mazzochi.

This meant there was no quorum and action couldn’t be taken on any items on the agenda.

Residents who showed up despite confusion with two different meeting times, expressed their frustration with the board who seems to be picking sides.

“You should have worked with the board who set the meeting, there are three of you, there are three of them. At some point, some of you are going to have to understand that working together is the adult thing to do,” said Karol Sole, who spoke during public comment.

“We, the citizens of DuPage have run out of patience. The leadership, the trustees and the administrative leadership responsible for this have to leave… they must go… now,” said Bill Graham, another speaker during public comment.

Without all members present, the board could not move forward with the nomination and election of a new board chairman.

The previous chair Kathy Hamilton resigned last month.

The college is also in search of a new president.
