Honored for 50 Years

Years of hard work, dedication and a philosophy to “Run for Fun and Personal Bests” …Coach Al Carius was honored at North Central College’s Alumni Track Meet for his 50 years of accomplishments.

“We feel so incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to lead an institution that was a worthy platform for Al Carius to invest his career in the task of investing in others,” said Dr. Troy Hammond, President of North Central College.

Friends, family and alumni gathered in celebrating Coach Carius, who also received an honorable North Central College Cross Country and Track and Field National Championship Trophy case.

“I thank you for what you’ve done in my life, what you’ve done for NCC what you’ve done all of you, and I want to let you know and I don’t mean not in a romantic way but in a deep deep deep loving way I really do love each and every one of you and thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you,” said Coach Carius.

In five decades, he earned 26 National Championships, 95 conference titles, and more than 500 all America awards.

And while he had much success in numbers, the relationship s he built over the years with his students speak even greater measure.

“When I stepped out of here 26 years ago and left North Central for graduate school the lessons I learned from Coach Carius, have carried me on a daily basis whether times were tough or times were great, his words have resonated with me each and every day, especially when things were tough, because those words got me through really tough times,” said Dr. Paul Solomon Hermis, North Central College Alumni.

Coach Carius is a native of Morton, Illinois and attended the University of Illinois where he won five Big-Ten Conference championships. He joined North Central in 1966 and has earned the cross-country title of “Coach of the Century,” was inducted into Chicagoland’s Sports Hall of Fame and became an honorary alumnus of North Central in 2006.
