With Twitter handles and videos like these popping up all over the internet, some people are concerned about their safety.
While the Naperville Police Department has yet to receive calls reporting clowns in the area, they are reminding residents to be mindful and cognizant of their surroundings.
“It’s not against the law to put a costume on and walk around. Where it becomes problematic is if someone is causing problems. So just like anything, whether it’s a clown or any other behavior, if the behavior is suspicious in manner, threatening, menacing, absolutely call 9-1-1 and we will respond,” said Commander Jason Arres with the Naperville Police Department.
The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office has released guidelines if you do come across a clown.
Those include calling 9-1-1 if you see a clown acting suspiciously, not confronting clowns, and staying in a public place at a fair distance away from the clown.
Even the White House has weighed in on the clown epidemic, calling for law enforcement agencies to take the situations seriously.
Naperville News 17’s Alyssa Bochenek reports.
