January 12th marked the final day for one of Naperville’s longest operating family businesses.
Kreger’s Central Foods recently said goodbye to the community it has served for 120 years.
Customers filtered in all day to make their last purchases, while many came for the last batch of the store’s famous brats.
“I’ve got my brats!” said Naperville resident John Robbins. “The last of the brats, which are famous here. My daughters came here while growing up and they’re [going to] miss it. Hooray for Bill and the Kregers!”
Others came for Kreger’s other specialties one last time.
“We’ve been coming her for over 23 years buying brats and pickled beets,” said Dave Rahtz who lives two houses down from the store. “We even got the last of the three-bean salad which we enjoy.”
And many remember their childhoods spent at the store.
“Kreger’s was here before I was born and also before my dad was born,” said Jennifer Berthold a longtime shopper at the store. “He’s got fond memories of shopping here, we all do.”
Owner Bill Kreger said he is ready for a change and thanked customers for their support for his family over the years.
