Naperville Park District officials are working to clean up another park for residents to enjoy. They recently hired Shaw Group Incorporated to collect and analyze soil out at Sportsman’s Park. The 27-acre grounds off Oswego Road and West Street are home to a trap shooting range. Sharp shooters have been hitting the target for more than 60 years.
But until 1997 the shots being fired contained lead. The park shut down then when residents complained the element contaminated the soil. The park district spent two and a half years cleaning the range up.
For the last ten years, patrons have used a steel shot. Shaw will examine the soil and water to make sure no lead was left behind.
The city owns Sportsman’s Park, and the park district leases the land.
Back in June both parties agreed to enroll the park in the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency’s Voluntary Site Remediation program. Hiring the Shaw Group to inspect the land is the first step of many to enter the program.
