City of Naperville looks to Collaborate with Township

At the latest City Council Meeting, the group voted to continue discussions on a proposal for an intergovernmental agreement for shared services between the city of Naperville and Naperville Township’s Road District.

Stemming from Governor Rauner’s plan to streamline local government, the agreement could save taxpayers nearly $800,000 over ten years by expanding city services of roadway maintenance to cover all of the township. The plan would also reduce staff, and change the frequency of services.

“It may seem like a small amount of money compared to what the school districts tax, for example, but any decrease in the tax burden and simplification I think would be a step in the right direction, both economically and culturally,” said Rachel Ossyra, Naperville Township Supervisor.

But some township residents were concerned about how services might be prioritized in the township verse the city.

“Our median cost of our homes are lower than the median house in Naperville, therefore our neighborhood might not be considered worthy of prompt attention as a higher priced home,” said Robert Moffett, Naperville Township Resident.

Council members assured the public that their needs would not be overlooked and are confident the agreement would move the city forward.
