Each year since 1986, Naperville’s American Legion Post 43 has chosen a citizen that shows extraordinary service to the Naperville area, and the 2013 results are in.
Jenny Dawley, the Director of Senior Services for the Naperville Township, was chosen from dozens of other nominees based on her compassion and willingness to help seniors and veterans.
“I like it when I can see people smile,” said Dawley. “And when they come in and they’re not smiling and they’re not having a good day, and you can brighten their day, and you can put a smile on their face. I like that a lot. It’s the little things.”
Dawley also works with a number of organizations, including Autism Speaks and the Community Career Center and makes regular trips to visit veterans at Hines VA Hospital.
“When someone is in need, and that need may be a hospital visit, that need may be to take food to the family, she just pops up,” said Chairman of the 2013 Citizen of the Year Selection Committee. “ Her heart is really into what she does for people.”
Naperville’s American Legion is one of the state’s most active posts.
