Camp Edge

A group of seven teenagers gravitated towards the idea of helping others and decided to join Camp E.D.G.E. The Fry Family YMCA started this new camp for youngsters to “Educate, Develop, Give, and Experience.”

The goal is to teach 6th, 7th, and 8th graders leadership, cooperation, and problem-solving through volunteering.

“Most of these guys I’ve had for four years and it’s really cool to see them step inside that leadership position,” said Sean Roe, the camp’s director. “I think they might be a little bit out of their comfort zone, especially today but I think that’s good and they’re really coming into their own and helping them develop which is what this camp is all about.”

At the DuPage Children’s Museum campers cleaned up exhibits and showed young kids how to use them.

“Well it feels good cause there’s many people that could do it but take 2 or 3 hours of our time and making a difference in the whole museum, just makes you feel good,” said camper Brandon Metry.

The museum relies on the nearly 800 volunteers, about half of which are teens, making for the perfect opportunity for camp edge.

“We really value having teens come and we love partnerships in the museum like the Y Campers,” said Diane Enrst, Coordinator of Volunteer Services for the DuPage Children’s Museum.

The young campers also packed sandwiches for DuPage PADS and brought blankets they made to the homeless shelter.

The group did enjoy typical summer activities, like going to a waterpark and fishing but at the end of the day, camp edge was all about setting teens up for a lifelong passion in serving others.

“I hope that they carry this with them, continue to do service work in life,” said Roe. “I want them to understand that service work doesn’t necessarily have to be work and that it’s really fun.”

In July, the campers will help deliver refurbished computers to many schools throughout district 204.

Registration is still available for more teens to join camp edge. For more information, visit www.fryymca.org.
