The Naperville Police Department is now among 6,000 other departments nationwide equipped with in-car cameras.
The 38 vehicles equipped with the new technology will record every stop the officers make, with video and audio, and can be used in court as evidence.
“You can paint the picture a lot better by just hitting play with the evidence we have with the cameras and let the judge or the jury watch the video in addition to the officers testimony,” said Naperville Police Commander, Jason Arres in October of 2013.
The almost $300,000 program is funded through DUI fees. For every DUI, the city receives $350 from the state of Illinois.
Until now, Naperville was one of the only departments in the area without the in-car cameras.
