Breast Cancer Lecture

Edward Hospital recently held a lecture on Breast Cancer prevention in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Dr. Swati Kulkarni from The University of Chicago Cancer Center was the featured speaker. The presentation highlighted Kulkarni’s own research, including dietary changes that might help women lower their risks for the disease

“One of the areas I’m interested in is natural foods,” said Kulkarni. “I’m studying a natural food called flax seed. I currently have a clinical trial open at The University Of Chicago studying [natural foods] as a possible prevention for breast cancer.”

Women in attendance learned that their medical past does not have to determine their future.

“A lot of people will think, oh my mom had it, or my aunt had it so I’m going to have to get it, and that’s not the case,” said Jan Saran, a Naperville resident and 25-year Breast Cancer survivor. “They’re telling us now our DNA is not our destiny.”

Edward hopes to put on a similar talk, about pancreatic cancer, in late November.
