Brave The Shave

The Naperville Police and Fire Department joined together to brave the shave for childhood cancer research at the annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation event.

This is the 12th year for the event, which was originally brought to Naperville in support of a local police officer’s daughter.

“A bunch of my friends from the police department started the event here in Naperville. At that time, Piper was at Children’s Hospital and she was receiving her last treatment,” said Naperville Police Officer, Louis Jourdan.

Worldwide, a child is diagnosed with cancer every three minutes, and St. Baldrick’s hosts head-shaving events to raise money for children’s cancer research.

This year, more than $116,000 was raised through Naperville’s public safety departments, totaling more than $1 million since its beginning.

“It’s really personal to us because we have several members in our departments, who have had children with cancer. This is a great event for the community as well as our police department. Obviously the cure is in research, so the more money we can raise for research, the better,” said Naperville Chief of Police, Robert Marshall.

The evening included remembrance for lives lost and a celebration of survivorship before the shaving fun kicked off.

While there’s still work to be done in the battle against cancer, St. Baldrick’s has awarded more than $154 million to support lifesaving research since 2005.

“It’s nice to know that the police department, the fire department, and certainly the community comes together to support that,” added Jourdan.
