Illinois would be home to another Big 10 state school if Illinois Senator Mike Connelly has his way.
Connelly, along with fellow State Senator Matt Murphy of Palatine, have introduced legislation in Springfield to study the idea of making one the current state universities into a Big 10 school.
Right now, the University of Illinois is the only state school in the Big 10. Northwestern University is also part of the conference, but is a private institution.
SB 3256 has passed the higher education committee and could be called for a vote soon.
If the bill passes it will create a study commission comprised of higher education professionals, one member from each of the four caucuses in the General Assembly, an Illinois resident paying out of state tuition at a Big 10 school, and a student from Illinois who has left the state to attend another Big 10 school.
Senator Connelly says Southern Illinois University might be a good choice because of its location.
