The holidays will be here before you know it. Homemade gifts and decorations are always a good idea for those on a budget. But if you don’t have the time or the skill, you can still buy low cost handmade items and benefit a local treasure.
For more than 40 years the Weed Ladies have been using their crafting skills to raise money for the Naperville Heritage Society. The group’s mission is to help fund Naper Settlement, but the unofficial goal is to have a lot of fun.
“I’m doing the thing I love doing more than anything in the world. It’s kind of hard to go home sometimes,” said Alberta Kolbialka, the newest member of the Weed Ladies.
Kolbialka may be a new member, but she’s not a rookie. She joined the group a year ago bringing experience as a floral design teacher and professional arranger, and the group has a variety of skill levels and backgrounds they bring to their arranging.
“That’s why we have such a nice display, we have different personalities doing the displays,” said Kolbialka.
Buyers’ own personalities can influence their selections, the Weed Ladies will adjust their designs to suit individual tastes, needs, and budgets.
“They should come here because we are a wonderful bargain. They look just like downtown, and the overhead we have is less, so we can make them available at really wonderful prices,” said Cathi Schumacher, the Weed Ladies’ longest running member.
The Weed Ladies are open for business anytime they’re working, which will be most Mondays and Wednesdays through December.
