An award-winning author recently made an appearance at a local college. Isabel Wilkerson recently spoke about her new book at North central College.
Wilkerson is the first black woman to win a Pulitzer Prize in the history of American journalism. The award is given every year to journalists, authors, and composers that obtain the highest prestige of their work.
Her book, The Warm of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration, won the National Book Critics Circle Award in 2011.
Wilkerson emphasized the harsh conditions in which those from the South migrated, and how influential it was on American history. She noted, “Much of 20th Century American culture as we know it, simply would not be as we know, had there been no Great Migration.”
Wilkerson was also the first African American to win the Pulitzer for individual reporting.
