22 local women took to the stage tonight as part of Artful IMPACT!’s first ever Cabaret for a Cause, held at Community Christian Church.
The show, titled Journey to Wisdom, was set around Doris, the lead female, who shared her own life journey with a young family member.
The music centers on her friendships, love life, and faith.
“It’s about empowering middle aged women, who maybe haven’t had a chance on stage,” said Barbara Yokom one of the founders of Artful IMPACT! and one of the organization’s board members. “Maybe they danced or performed in some way when they were younger and maybe didn’t do it as a profession or just haven’t had the opportunity.”
The performers, from all different musical backgrounds, rehearsed together for about six weeks to prepare. For some, it was a step outside their comfort zones.
“It’s fun, it’s nerve wracking,” said performer Carol Craig. “You get out there and you have the butterflies in your stomach. But once you get going, it’s like ‘hey you know what, I could do this all day.’”
Organizers let the singers do as much or as little as they want. They even allowed one special male guest to take the stage tonight, Naperville City Councilman Bob, Fieseler.
“The cast members choose how much they want to participate, so if someone has a solo, it’s because they’ve asked to have one,” said Yokom, who was a performer herself. “And that’s the case for Councilman Fieseler.”
The more than 150 members of the audience also helped a local charity with the purchase of their ticket.
The DuPage Senior Citizen’s Council’s Meals on Wheels program, that helps feed the elderly in our community, will receive a portion of the proceeds from tonight’s event.
Artful IMPACT! is a Naperville not for profit that hopes to strengthen the community through the arts.
And if this looks like fun to you, Artful IMPACT! announced your next chance to get involved and perform.
“Next Cabaret for a Cause will be in February, and it’s going to be for men and women,” said Yokom. “And so we’re looking for the organization that will benefit financially from that one.”
The show will be titled “Love is a Cabaret” and you can visit artfulimpact.org for more information.
