Are You Prepared for an Emergency?

The Naperville flood of 2013, house fires and power outages are just a few of the emergencies that have hit Naperville over the past few years.

The Senior Task force and local emergency management specialists are hoping to help seniors be more prepared for events like this in the future.

“I can pretty much guarantee you we will have a flood in the next 10 years, I know we’ll have high-wind events in the area so planning for those natural disasters such as tornados, floods, winter storms are all likely to happen,” said Dan Nelson, Coordinator of the Naperville Office of Emergency Management.

Through the hour-long discussion, seniors learned how to best be aware of potential emergencies by staying informed and making sure they’re up to date on the latest technology.

Local resident, Ruth Allison, thinks the lesson will not only help her but lend to others as well.

“The more I can learn the better I can prepare, the more I can help my family. Perhaps I’ll be volunteering like I do at the Ann Reid School, maybe those little children have an emergency, how can I best help them?” said Allison.

Those preparations include forming a kit that includes any vital materials you may need during an emergency, like prescription drugs, food and water, flashlight, batteries and blankets.

“You may not be able to get help right away, and seconds count, time is of essence , so its really important so its really important that people prepare themselves and their families,” said Sabit Abbasi, Emergency Management Specialist with the DuPage County Office of Homeland Security.

One last tip, make sure you have a plan in place to contact a family member or friend in the case of an emergency to check on their whereabouts.
