Arab Stereotypes Workshop

Alex Barna, the Outreach Coordinator of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Chicago, took a closer look at where negative Middle Eastern stereotypes come from.

By analyzing books, television and film, and even propaganda, Barna pointed out that we are surrounded by negative depictions of Muslims.

Barna encouraged students to take away a sense of reflection and understand where exactly these stereotypes come from.

“I hope that they, he or she, would take away a notion of, or an idea of trying to disrupt stereotypes, to understand patterns of negative stereotyping. And to be able to identify the pattern when they see it and to be able to question it, and to question it critically and to understand, perhaps, where the stereotype comes from,” said Barna.
