An Educational Twist on Summertime

The Robert Crown Center is putting an educational twist on summer camp.

More than 20 local kids ditched the outdoors for the science lab at Body Trek Camp.

Local students aren’t afraid of getting their hands dirty for the sake of science at the Robert Crown Center’s Body Trek Camp.

“This camp is a time for kids to be exposed to science and medicine, and to have fun learning,” said Dr. David Bedney, coordinator and leader for Body Trek.

For two weeks, fifth through eighth graders joined a team of doctors, nurses, and teachers at North Central College for an in-depth look at possible future careers in medicine and science.

“Some wanted to be researchers or physiologists or nurses, and I just want to keep that going because we need lots of these people,” said Dr. Roma Franzia, educator for the camp.

Kids got a chance to visit an operating room, check out The Museum of Science and Industry, and dissect real animal parts like a cow eyeball.

“You get to discover what’s inside animals and human bodies because they can be really similar and what can make you see and how you breath,” said Naperville resident and camper, Elyse Costello.

Claire Li, of Naperville enjoyed coming to the two-week camp. “It’s kind of fun, It’s squishy and slippery. We are learning about the body, we dissected the fetal pig, the cornea, the iris, and the trachea and the different body parts.”

“It’s kind of gross but at least we are wearing gloves, but you kind of get used to it,” said justice Bathas, Naperville resident.

Camp educators hope that by the end of body trek, kids will leave with not only memories and photograph, but also a better quality of life.

Dr. Franzia added, “I firmly believe that each human being has a journey or a mission in life, and we have to learn how to take care of our body to get to our goal.”

This is the 15th year for Body Trek summer camp in the Chicago land area, but the first time it’s ever been brought to Naperville.

The Robert Crown Center has touched more than 80,000 people through its educational programs.
