African Americans have served in the United States Armed Forces for hundreds of years. In honor of Black History Month local residents recently gathered at the First Division Museum at nearby Cantigny for the Untold Story: African Americans in the U.S. Military.
Author and historian Michael Lee Lanning, along with four current and retired military men, presented the program by sharing excerpts from a Frank Martin film, “For Love of Liberty” and their own experiences.
“These men are beacons of freedom. These men are the men that defend our democracy,” said Lanning, Lieutenant (ret.), U.S. Army “
“We’re out there fighting as one where you don’t see a color in the conditions of Afghanistan and Iraq,” said Andrew Gainey, Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army.
The presentation stressed the hardships of African American men and women who served in all branches of the Armed Forces.
