ACT at 203

Since 2001, the ACT has been the universal college entrance exam for Illinois, with the state providing high school juniors with an opportunity to take the test free of charge at least once. But all of that may no longer be the case.

“Just this month the state of Illinois has announced that it selected the SAT to replace the ACT as the universal college entrance exam, but it has not, to date, provided funding for the transition,” said Tim Wierenga, Assistant Superintendent for Assessment and Analytics for District 203.

To make sure their students have the chance to take a college entrance exam for free, officials proposed that the district cover the roughly $80,000 fee for all current juniors to take the ACT on April 19th. A decision many board members appeared to support.

“You can’t change the trajectory of these kids who have already gone this path in December, when they’re in review classes right now. So I applaud the district for doing what’s right for our kids,” said Jackie Romberg, current Board Member for District 203.

Board members also reviewed the proposal to house Naper Elementary’s fifth graders at Washington Junior High, the Facilities Capital Improvement plan and the proposed 2015 Tax Levy.

All of these matters will be up for a vote at the next board meeting on December 21st.
