One of the most common New Year’s resolutions for people is to get in shape. For some local residents, hitting the gym doesn’t include the treadmill or bench press.
Rope training has been around since the 1800’s but the concept has more recently been transformed into a workout called TRX, which stands for Total Body Resistance Exercise.
Several times a week dozens of residents join group fitness instructor and personal trainer Jim O’Connell for his TRX fitness class at the Kroehler Family YMCA. “If you are doing push ups, curls, sit ups, with the assistance with the TRX there’s no doubt in my mind you’ll be able to do those on your own and it will feel like an accomplishment,” said O’Connell.
Naperville Resident Deb Vong has recently become interested in the class. “It’s just a great workout. I’m sore when I’m done but I can tell it’s really working every muscle and you get a great workout in a really short amount of time,” she said.
The system works by suspending either the lower or upper parts of the body. Working against gravity helps train multiple muscle groups at once.
Former U.S. Navy SEAL Randy Hetrick developed TRX and the equipment so that military men and women could exercise anywhere. The most basic kit includes a cord with handles or foot strap and a pole or anchor, and can be used at home or on the go.
Kara Mason works as an Assistant Health and Wellness Director at the Kroehler YMCA. She enjoys TRX as a way to switch up her normal workout routine. “People love it. They think its challenging but it can be adjusted so easily because the straps lengthen and shorten so you can play with the angles and make it more challenging or a little bit easier,” said Mason.
Mastering a few core movements will help develop strength, balance, and flexibility.
