City officials had a huge headache in October when the Naperville website was hacked.
A virus was found within site, leaving city staff without email for approximately three weeks.
The FBI is still investigating the breach in security, but believes the intruder was not from the local area.
The city hired a private Canadian consulting firm in October to help fix the problem.
The $673,000 project included hardware for firewalls, hacker detection software, and consulting fees for network intrusion analysis and network restoration.
The re-designed city website is now up and running and city officials are enacting preventative measures to deter issues in the future.
“One of the things that the city noticed during the network intrusion was that we have established a whole set of emergency plans for disasters,” said City Manager Doug Krieger. “However, one we have not established was one for a cyber security issue, like we experienced. Because of that, we are in the process for creating one so that we will be better prepared in the future.”
The lapse in service also affected emailing for other Naperville.il.us sites, including Naper Settlement.
