A Naperville boy and North Central College alumna got to take the stage at this year’s Tony Awards.
13-year-old Johnny Rabe, who played the lead role of Ralphie in “A Christmas Story, The Musical,” performed in the ceremony’s opening number.
The musical was nominated for three awards including Best Musical but didn’t clinch any of them.
The production that did win Best Musical? “Kinky Boots” and a swing in the show, Lucia Spina, performed an act from the show at the Tony’s.
She kicked off her acting career as a theatre student at North Central College, graduating in 1997.
Director Brian Lynch remembers teaching Spina during his first year at NCC and he says he’s one of her biggest fans.
“I felt like a proud papa watching her because it was somebody I helped learn the craft, somebody I worked with who’s there on Broadway now and in a Tony Award-winning musical. It’s great!” said Lynch.
Spina also played a role in the Broadway versions of “Legally Blonde” and “Les Miserables.”
