Police Investigating Potential Hate Crime

Police are working with the DuPage State’s Attorney’s Office to investigate a potential hate crime that occurred at Naperville Central High School involving two NCHS students. Students at NCHS were disciplined after what District 203 calls a “racially-insensitive electronic post” surfaced online. Though the district did not detail the content of the post, NBC Chicago reported it included a Craigslist ad with the photo of a black student with the caption, “Slave for sale (NAPERVILLE).” A note was sent home to parents regarding the incident on Friday. D203 is hosting two Focus 203 sessions on Thursday to discuss “Implicit Bias and Courageous Conversations.” The sessions will be held at 9 a.m. at the municipal center and 7 p.m. at the Naperville North Learning Commons and all community members are welcome to attend.

City Budget Workshop

At the second 2020 City Budget Workshop last night, Naperville city staff finished the budget presentation to city council. The Naperville Public Library and Naper Settlement reviewed their budget requirements, and the Public Safety departments also went over their 2020 budgets. That could include a new four-person “Strategic Patrol Unit” for the police department. They would focus on “addressing consistent service call types associated with mental health and drug abuse” among other responsibilities. Council will vote on the final budget on December 3.

Survivors Banquet

The Naperville Fire Department’s first ever “Survivors Banquet” event was standing room only yesterday at Meson Sabika. It was an emotional evening as survivors who suffered a cardiac arrest or other emergency event in Naperville this past year were able to meet the men and women responsible for saving their lives.
