School Facilities Sales Tax

The District 204 School Board approved a resolution supporting a ballot question asking for a school facilities sales tax in Will County. Revenue from the proposed tax would be restricted to use for school facilities, but before the question can make it to the ballot this fall, it must be approved by enough school districts in Will County to account for over half of its 130,000-strong student population. Jay Strang, District 204’s Chief School Business Official, said last night that the tax could bring in an additional $5.4 million per year, and that it would help fund many of the deferred maintenance projects 204 has.

Substitute Pay Increase

Substitute pay is up in District 204. After a vote last night, substitutes can expect to earn $100 per day – an increase of $10. Retired District 204 teachers will get an additional $10 per day to incentivize them to come back to the classroom a little more often. School district officials hope that this raise will increase the fill rate of substitutes, which fell below 90 percent during the last school year.

Carillon Concerts

The Millennium Carillon’s bells will be ringing tonight as guest carillonneur Laura Ellis, from Florida, gives a recital. The free concert begins at 7 p.m., and as usual, lawn chairs, blankets, and picnics are welcome on Rotary Hill. After the concert, tours of the tower are offered for two dollars per person.

North Central’s All-Academic Teams

North Central College Athletics received some more accolades for their achievements in academics yesterday. The Men’s Golf team was named an All-Academic team selection by the Golf Coaches Association of America for the third consecutive year. The Cardinals are one of only 34 Division III programs selected to the list.

The NCC Women’s Lacrosse team has been named All-Academic by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association for the 9th time in the past 10 years. Cardinals junior defender Sydney Manning was also named to the IWLCA Honor Roll.
