Naperville Now 02-20-19

Moment of Silence:

At their meeting last night, Naperville City Council paused for a moment of silence for the victims of last Friday’s shooting attack in Aurora. Mayor Steve Chirico began the meeting with a comment on the shooting, saying the city denounces acts of senseless violence. He also thanked the first responders from Naperville and the many other communities who assisted in the incident for their service.

Aurora Fundraisers:

The Aurora Strong Community Fund set up by the City of Aurora has reached nearly $100,000 as of 11 a.m. this morning. At a press conference yesterday, officials thanked those individuals and businesses that have donated, adding a special thanks to Luigi’s Pizza and Fun Center, which served as a staging area for first responders during the incident. The pizzeria will be holding a radiothon fundraiser this Friday hosted by 95.9 FM The River from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

New Naperville Central Softball Field:

The Naperville Central Varsity Softball Field is that much closer to getting revamped. Last night the District 203 board approved a bid of $824,700 from Lite Construction Inc. The field at Knoch Park is scheduled for construction to begin this summer. Also of note at the meeting, Michael Frances was appointed the new Chief Financial Officer for the district. He takes the position in wake of the former CFO, Marcy Boyan, being charged with misconduct and theft from her previous employer. Frances previously worked for Oswego School District 308.

Open Discussion At Anderson’s:

Anderson’s Bookshop is starting a new program to foster thoughtful conversation about topics that are often polarizing. The Open Discussion Project is sponsored by the National Coalition Against Censorship, and seeks to promote civil conversations on controversial topics through books. Participants will meet once a month to discuss a book of their choice, on topics like racism, religion, and immigration. Anderson’s is one of just six independent bookstores in the country chosen to pilot this program.
