Officer Shoots Armed Man:

Last night a Naperville police officer shot a man who pointed a gun at a group of officers. Police responded to the report of a suspicious man at a strip mall in the 1200 block of west Ogden Avenue around 10:30 p.m. They found a 27-year-old man standing in a parking lot with a gun pointed to his head. He then shifted his aim toward the officers and moved toward them, prompting a response.

“One of the officers discharged their firearm, striking the subject,” said Naperville Police Chief Bob Marshall. “Once secure, the subject was transferred to an area hospital for treatment, where he remains in serious but stable condition.”

If you have any information about the incident, please contact the Naperville police at (630) 420-6173.

Apartment Fire:

One person was treated for minor injuries after an apartment fire in the 1400 block of Fairway Drive. The Naperville Fire Department responded to the call around 9:50 p.m. on Wednesday night. They found a cooking fire had been sparked in a third-floor unit. Nine adults and three children safely evacuated, and crews extinguished the fire. Three apartment units remain uninhabitable due to smoke and water damage.

Mayoral Candidate Forum:

Mayor Steve Chirico and challenger Rocky Caylor participated in Naperville’s first mayoral candidate forum of the 2019 election season at City Hall last night. Instead of facing off, like a debate, each candidate spent 30 minutes in front of the audience alone, answering a series of questions on topics like development, the environment, and city services. The forum was hosted by Indivisible Naperville and several other grassroots political organizations.

Park District Seeks OSLAD Grant:

The Naperville Park District is seeking some funding help from the state for the future Southwest Community Park. They’ve applied for an Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development or OSLAD grant, in the hopes of getting $400,000 toward the project. The park, planned near the intersection of Wolf’s Crossing Road and Trumpet Avenue, is one of 108 projects in the running to get funding from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. There’s no set date for the announcement of who will be awarded the monies, but it should be in time for the construction season. The park district has already taken out $11 million in loans to fund phase one of the park.
