Metea Threats Not Credible, Police Say | ‘Senior Friendly’ Apartments Approved | New Hobson Oak Beer

Metea Threats Not Credible, Police Say:

Two different written threats against Metea Valley High School were found this week. The messages discovered in school bathrooms both Monday and Wednesday were deemed by Aurora Police to be not credible. Aurora police told the Daily Herald a student was charged with disorderly conduct in Monday’s incident and faces school discipline. They said an investigation into the second threat is ongoing. As a precautionary measure, Aurora police will have an increased presence on campus for the rest of the week. Many parents chose to keep their high schoolers home today just to be safe. The Aurora Police Department is expected to release an updated statement on the matter later today.

‘Senior Friendly’ Apartments Approved:

The Regency Inn motel at 1350 E. Ogden Avenue will be converted to a 112-unit “micro-apartment” building. At Tuesday’s Naperville City Council meeting, the dais approved a plan to rezone the property to allow for the change. Due to the size of the units, about 300 square feet on average, rents in the complex are expected to qualify as affordable housing. Co-chair of the Naperville Senior Task Force Jim Hill spoke in support of the project at the meeting, saying it gives local seniors an affordable option to downsize to while still staying in town. A representative from petitioner MZ Capital Partners said they plan to waive the application fee for those 55 and older to encourage seniors to move in. Seniors will also get a 30-day priority period to rent apartments in the initial leasing, and as units open up.

New Hobson Oak Brew:

The historic Hobson Oak has made its way into another beer. “Hobson S’more” pays tribute to the roughly 250-year-old tree that once stood on Hobson Road, using some of its wood chips to produce the imperial milk stout. Miskatonic Brewing Company, Hop Butcher, and Solemn Oath breweries all collaborated on the brew, which also has flavors of vanilla, cocoa nibs, marshmallow and graham cracker. Tomorrow at 5 p.m. Solemn Oath will hold a release party, which will also feature a silent auction of items made from the bur oak like this guitar. Proceeds will help support the Naperville Parks Foundation and partner charities. But if you miss the release party, Hobson S’more is set to hit shelves next week at local businesses.

Winter Reading Program Begins:

The Winter Reading Program is underway at all three Naperville libraries. Kids in fifth grade or below can take part by picking up a reading log either in person or online. Once they have their log, they’ll pick a daily goal to read everyday, and color in an icon once it’s met. Once ten are filled, they can head to the library starting December 16 for a prize, and be entered in the weekly and grand prize drawings. If you go through all three levels, you can even get a free book. Teens can also take part with their own reading contest that starts on December 20. The program wraps up January 10 for the teens, and January 19 for the younger kids.
