Heat Wave Warning
Severe thunderstorms delayed an excessive heat warning, but it’s finally here. The National Weather Service expects the temperature today and tomorrow to reach as high as 98 degrees with heat indexes up to 110 degrees. It’s recommended to take extra precautions by drinking plenty of water, rescheduling outside activities to the early morning or evening, and brushing up on the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The heat can be particularly hazardous for the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.
First Female Deputy Chief
In March, the Naperville Fire Department named Amy Scheller as its newest Deputy Chief, making her the first woman to hold the position. The department held a ceremony at the municipal center yesterday to honor her alongside other promoted employees. Both the fire department and the Naperville Police Department now have a woman serving at the second highest level of their organizations: Scheller and NPD Deputy Chief Kathy Anderson. Scheller has served in the NFD for more than 20 years, starting with the department in 1998. She was also Naperville’s first female fire lieutenant about ten years ago. She said hopes her promotion will be an inspiration to other young women.
DeVry Ribbon Cutting
Alumni, school administrators, and elected officials all gathered for the opening of DeVry University’s new Headquarters and Academic Center in Naperville. The center combined previous locations in Naperville and Downers Grove for its new building that will house 500 employees and features smart classrooms. Students will be able to communicate with other DeVry locations throughout the US using smart cameras.
Summer Water Polo
The final games of the Naperville Suburban Summer Water Polo League wrapped up this week at the Naperville North pool. In the U-14 girls championship, the Huntington Estates Seahawks won a very competitive matchup 9-8 over Hobson West. Later in the night in the U-14 co-ed championship, it was again the Seahawks of Huntington Estates taking home the championship plaque after a 10-4 win over the Saybrook Sharks. Congratulations to all the athletes on another great summer water polo season!
