Decline in D204 Suspensions:
Out-of-school suspensions in Indian Prairie School District 204 are down from last year. At the latest school board meeting, administrators reported that of the 27,520 students enrolled in the 2018-2019 school year, 266 received an out-of-school suspension, which is less than 1% of the student population. Though OSS numbers have continued to decline over the past six years, there is some disparity when it comes to black students when compared to other racial groups. Black students make up 9% of the district, but account for about a third of OSS. White students, who make up 44% of the student population, receive 36% of OSS. Administrators said they are taking care to ensure that no implicit bias is involved in any disciplinary decisions.
Gateway to Tree Science:
There’s a new exhibit at Morton Arboretum. Gateway to Tree Science is a living exhibit, focused on the care of trees, and the extensive science and research efforts the Arboretum has put into just that. A half-mile path lined with trees and informational panels fills visitors in on the biology and function of trees, challenges and threats to their existence, and research being done right at the Arboretum to keep them healthy and growing. The exhibit is meant to be a resource for homeowners, students and tree care professionals. Entrance is included with the price of admission to the Arboretum.
Officer Of The Year:
Congratulations to Sergeant Brad Marsh, who’s been named the Naperville Exchange Club’s Police Officer of the Year. He received the honor for his role in helping to rescue a child that fell through the ice into a pond, and for his involvement in training first responders how to better respond to mental-health related incidents.
