Civil War Days Cancelled:
Civil War Days will no longer be taking place at Naper Settlement. The Naperville Heritage Society announced today that the event, which has been held at the settlement for 37 years, will not return in 2020. The decision is financially based. The Naperville Heritage Society says over the past five years, they’ve seen a 52% decline in attendance, a 35% decline of re-enactor volunteers, and a 50% drop in revenue. As a replacement, the museum will be offering different large-scale pop-up educational exhibits each year, starting with a World War II focused event in 2020: Homefront 1940s Weekend.
DUI Arrests on Decline:
A new report shows the number of DUI arrests in Naperville is on the decline. According to the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists, our city ranked eighth in the state for DUI arrests, and sixth in the suburbs for 2018. Last year, Naperville had 10 fewer arrests for driving under the influence than in the year before. First on the list for most DUI arrests is Rockford, with 552, as compared to Naperville’s 261. It should be noted that the AAIM did not include Chicago in their rankings, which because of its population, consistently ranks first in the state. The Naperville Police Department attributes our dropping DUI arrest numbers to more ride-sharing services, taxi availability, better education on the dangers of driving under the influence, and stronger penalties.
Weigh in On City Development:
There’s still time to weigh in on future development in Naperville. The City has extended the deadline for questionnaire submissions on their Comprehensive Master Plan until August 15. The plan gives guidance on the growth and development of the city. You can share your opinion through the questionnaire on the city’s website.
Parking Lot Repairs:
The east parking lot at Naperville Park District’s Frontier Sports Complex will be closed for repairs and paving during August. The east pavilion of the facility at 3415 Book Road will also close until work is complete near the end of that month. Those heading to the complex will have access through the Cedar Glade Drive entrance at the corner of Cedar Glade Drive and 95th Street.
