What Role Does Creativity Play in Your Workplace?
And what does creativity in the workplace mean? Host Nicki Anderson and her guests explore how to develop a culture that encourages creativity, no matter what the type of business.
One of the buzz phrases is “growth mindset,” which for Kevin Bognar of Microsoft, is an environment where there is no failure–just learning. At Microsoft, he says,“There is a company saying that we want a company of learn-it–alls, not know-it-alls.”
This concept goes along with what Arthur Zard of LabZ and TEDx Naperville is hearing from the business community. He says, “Business leaders want creative problem solvers.” Zard sees creativity as a big advantage for the employee.
Lauren Urban’s company, Youtech Creative, is embracing the “thought generation” by starting a project off with a strategy or kick-off meeting with the entire team in the room to get the ideas going. Urban says,“It empowers people to do their jobs and do it well. It also shows them that they are valued in the company.”
“Creativity is hard,” says Zard. “I think people say they’re not creative because of complacency, but you have to work at it. If you want to sing, you have to practicing singing. If you want to do engineering, you have to learn to be creative, and that is through perspective.”
