Highlights form the North Central College women’s lacrosse game vs. Carthage, where the Cardinals take a 13-9 win.
North Central Head Coach Danielle Fiala has her team playing very well in the early season, off to a scorching 10-2 start… and that’s the greatest offensive threat the Cardinals own – junior Jessica Deetjen, who, with 50 goals entering the night, is NCC’s leading scorer. Meanwhile, Carthage comes in just 4-5 but has always provided a tough test for the Cardinals
About 7 minutes into the game and it’s scoreless… that is, until Deetjen gets a free position shot to put NCC up 1-0. Deetjen poised to break the single season scoring record if she can keep up her pace.
That’s because she’s back at it again with 16 minutes remaining in the first half… after the Lady Reds score to tie the game, Deetjen somehow splits two defends, makes another hit the deck and finds the back of the twine… 2-1 North Central
Record for goals in a season sits at 61, set by Gina Fisher… and Deetjen has 52… make that 53. The Cardinal midfielder scores the team’s first three goals. North Central leads 3-1 with 12:04 to play in the first half.
But the junior can’t score ALL the goals… instead, the Cardinals working a little give and go action between Christina Truver and Grace Steiner… and then back to Truver… and her tally makes it 4-1. Her 32nd goal of the season.
And the duo hardly done… switching roles, it’s Truver finding Steiner over the middle… and the sophomore twin puts it in. North Central creating separation now, up 5-1 with 7 minutes to go in the first half.
And while we focus on the offense, Camille Seghesio is standing tall in net. Facing a third free position on this one Carthage possession, the senior goalie watches it hit off the pipe… and then stuffs the rebound effort to keep the net clean.
Taking a 6-2 lead into the half, the Cardinals coming out with a goal from Berit Vandenbrook.. only to see the Lady Reds respond with a tally from Nicole Bowman. It’s 8-3, 29 minutes to go in the game.
Now under 22 minutes to play and the score sitting 8-4, Carthage back at it, with Jessie Gibson performing the impressive move to get herself a goal despite contact. Lady Reds to within three.
But, the Cardinals just shrugging that off. Check out Deetjen pick off the pass on the hop… and then race against the entire Carthage defense to the net… and after one last defender whiffs… she finds twine. Unreal goal.. her fourth, NCC up 9-5.
Looking to solidify the lead and put Carthage away, Truver again picking up the assist to a Steiner… though, this time, it’s Annabelle with the goal! Two straight scorer by #23.
And then check out this play design… as Truver shakes free and Maddy McHugh finds her wide open over the middle. North Central leads 12-6 with 11 minutes to play.
And checking back in with the senior Seghesio… she stops another shot – one of 10 saves on the evening… as North Central runs away with a 13-9 win… moving to 3-1 in conference play, 11-2 overall.
