Highlights from the North Central College baseball teams game vs. Elmhurst at Wheaton’s Lee Pfund Stadium in Carol Stream.
North Central having to move its game to Wheaton’s home stadium… because of mid-April snow!
Game represents a chance to sweep the Elmhurst Blue jays, who enter 2-9 in CCIW play – Cardinals second in the conference with a 7-3 mark.
Meanwhile, senior Jeremy Quade is scaling the record books, already first all time in career at bats and stolen bases… while threatening the hits and runs records.
Jason Shanner the pitcher… he’s a sophomore working in his second start of his collegiate career.
And it doesn’t start off much better than this… two strikeouts in the opening frame.
But Elmhurst’s Jay Palmer also dealing – after a 1-2-3 first inning, he punches out John Carmody to begin the second. Palmer still searching for his first win of the season.
Both teams hitless… that is, until Colin Weilbacher digs in and rips a single up the middle. The junior batting an impressive 391 this season.
Cardinals unable to score so we go top 3. And Elmhurst nabs its first hit thanks to Colin Winston yanking on right side.
However… that is absolutely no issue for Shanner. The right-hander rings up Paul Fomby and Trevor Lorek on strikes in quick order. No damage done, and Shanner is cruising.
Bottom of the third proving a troublesome stretch for Palmer, who hits Colin Wojcik to begin the frame. Second leadoff man to reach for NCC.
Michael Stoltz up next, and he lays a bunt down the third base line… Chad Tucker charges and throws out Stoltz… but no one is covering third! The throw to the bag, wildly off the mark.. as Wojcik will motor all the way around from first to score and North Central now up 1-0.
Bottom five now, same score and the Cardinals have a pair of runners on for catcher Rob Marinec.. and the back stop drills one deep to left center… but just not enough on a chilly night. Game still sits 1-0.
Top 6 and the first bit of adversity for Shanner… as Fomby takes a hack at a high fastball and sends it soaring to right… bounces up and over the wall for a ground rule double.
After a failed bunt attempt leads to Fomby getting thrown out at third, Drew Raspolich goes oppo… and off of Joe Rizzo’s glove at second, setting up men on the corners. Blue jays would then score on a fielders choice.
Bottom 6 now and NCC has the bags juiced thanks to three walks… and Ryan Scott at the dish… and he hits one in the air to center… depp enough to bring in Carmody as North Central reclaims the lead, 2-1.
We’re zooming ahead to the final inning, and Shanner is still on the mound. But trouble is lurking… as Raspolich floats one left side… juuuust out of reach and into left. Leadoff man aboard.
After Shanner records the first out, he’s lifted in favor of Tyler Jones. Following a walk, he gets Karson Thomas to ground into a 6-4-3 double play… AND THAT’LL do it!
NCC sweeps Elmhurst, improving to 8-3 in conference, 18-7 overall.
