North Central College Baseball vs Carroll // 03.27.19

Highlights from the North Central College Baseball team’s conference opening win against Carroll.

Freshman hurler Luke Lamm tasked with getting the North Central baseball team into double digit wins… Cards 9-3. Senior third baseman Mat Sutherland and the offense scoring 7-plus runs a game… and would like a repeat of 2017… yes please. Carroll the first test in conference play.

Bottom of the first and senior centerfielder Jeremy Quade has been a staple at the top of the order for awhile… for this reason. Goes yard… a solo shot just one batter in. NCC up 1-0. He leads the Cardinals with a .458 batting average.

Next batter is Rob Marinec… and the Cardinals really not welcoming Pioneer pitcher Cameron Godinsky with good manners. The DH coasts into second with a double. Still only one out.

Two batters later and Colin Weilbacher digs in… he pulls one left side that gets past the hot corner… the shortstop tries to make a Derek Jeter-esque throw… but throws it away. Weilbacher winds up at second with a hit and an error, drinving in a run. 2-0 NCC after 1.

After a leadoff single by Justin Baker to open the second, Mitchell Massino rips one right back up the chute… that puts two men aboard with nobody away.

After a fielders choice, men on the corners and Carroll trying to swipe second… but catch Joe Rizzo nabs him for the second out.

And then Lamm picking himself up by punching out Trevor Benz to end the inning. Escapes an early jam to keep the Pioneers off the board.

Watching the Pioneers try to commit thievery in the top half, the Cardinals trying their hand at it in the bottom half… and Michael Stoltz swipes second.

Matt Sutherland still at the dish.. and the senior football player cranks an RBI single to center, plating Stoltz and the Cards lead 3-0 through 2 innings of play at Zimmerman stadium.

Let’s go top 3… one on, one away…. And Adam Baade lines a shot off Lamm’s glove and redirects it away from second baseman Eric Outlaw… that puts men on the corner… which isn’t good because..

This dude, Matthew Putman… is hitting 667 coming into the game with a near 1000 slug percentage. However, Lamm and the infield rising to the challenge… with the Cards turning the difficult 5-4-3 double play to end the threat.

Bottom three and the Cardinals looking to add… Rizzo in the box smokes a ball to left… it’s got carry…. But its off the wall… the catcher winds up with an RBI double. 4-0 North Central.

Next hitter… that’s Outlaw. And he yanks one to left in front of the left fielder… Rizzo motoring around third base, and he’ll slide in without a throw. 5-0 North Central after just 3 innings.

From there, Lamm going on cruise control as the Cards keep tacking on runs. The freshman ending the fourth and fifth inning with punchouts. 7 innings for the right – just 1 unearned run.

Fast forward to the bottom of the seventh and the wheels falling off for the Pioneers… Rizzo takes a walk, bringing in a run… 7-1.

After two more runs come across, Quade steps in… and the senior delivers not just a two run double… but the win! Mercy rule applies after 6 and a half innings. So Lamm’s performance… a complete game. Cardinals win 11-1.
