Elizabeth Braham Spencer
Executive Director
Emmy award-winning Executive Director Elizabeth “Liz” Braham Spencer has been with Naperville Community Television since 2002. Since that time, she has led Naperville Community Television in a successful move and equipment update to the Studio at 127 Ambassador Drive, arranged for several key new partnerships, and substantially increased the depth and quality of programming at NCTV17.
Spencer’s television production experience ranges from newscasts to children’s programming to talk shows to documentaries. One documentary series she produced was “A Day in the Life of a US Senator” (featuring Senators such as Paul Simon) aired on C-Span. Another was “AIDS Knows Your Name” with national distribution on a variety of networks and PBS. At Naperville Community Television, she leads the production teams for the award-winning Naperville Voices documentary.
She designed the NCTV17 Studio with its unique two wall studio sound stage. The studio design has proven to be not only versatile for sets and television tapings but also as a venue for large groups to view premieres and other programs. A standing room only crowd of 160 viewed the 2006 premiere showing of the 1931 Centennial Film at the NCTV17 Studio.
Spencer led NCTV17 to a new and valued partnership with North Central College. As adjunct faculty, she teaches television
production and supervises the student run Cardinal video group. The agreement formalizes expansion of the College’s current TV/video/broadcasting curriculum in partnership with Naperville Community Television.
Another 2006 partnership that Spencer spearheaded is with Naper Settlement/Naperville Heritage Society. The organizations are working cooperatively to capture and preserve important pieces of Naperville history for generations to come.
Deeply committed to teaching and mentoring young people, Spencer involves high school and college students wherever possible. She developed and continues to lead the highly regarded NCTV17 Internship Program. Several students have gone on to pursue careers in television production, broadcast journalism, or communication.
Spencer holds the highly valued combination of experience in both television production as well as business practices. Her education includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from Hope College and a Master of Science degree in Communication Management from Northwestern University. As Executive Director of NCTV17, she leads and inspires a gifted staff that shares her vision of quality television production.
Spencer has received numerous awards including the National Communicator Crystal Award of Excellence for the NCTV17 documentary “One in a Million: The Cock Robin & Prince Castle Story”, an ACT (Action for Children’s Television) award where she won over Sesame Street, and the Service Award of Excellence from the Illinois Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association. She won an Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for a LIVE awards show broadcast.
