League of Women Voters cites value of NCTV17
Candidate Interviews and Election Coverage

Rosemary Martin Award
The elections are past for now but the voice of democracy continues through the memory of Naperville resident and past League of Women Voters President Rosemary Martin. The Naperville League presents the Rosemary Martin award to a group or individual that furthers the effective participation of citizens in government. On May 27, the League presented the 2009 award to Naperville Community Television (NCTV17) and Elizabeth Braham Spencer, Executive Director.

Led by Spencer, NCTV17 was chosen for its balanced and broad election coverage which has been developed and expanded in recent years. The programs included pre-election interviews, rebroadcasts of community candidate forums, and live election night coverage. The most recent election broadcast was achieved through a production crew of over 60 and included the new Skype technology (also used by Oprah); the live production included interviews with candidates from their election-night headquarters, results and commentary.

“We think it is vitally important for the residents of our community to be knowledgeable voters,” said Spencer. “We are truly honored to be recognized in this way for our efforts.”

Spencer accepted the award from Karin Snodgrass, Chair of the Rosemary Martin Democracy in Action Award Committee and Jane Barnes, President of the Naperville League of Women Voters. The award was presented after the League’s annual meeting at City Club before an audience of League members, elected officials, past winners, and NCTV17 staff & board.

“NCTV17 represents a resource to voters in the community so that we have an electorate that is informed,” said League President Barnes. “It is democracy in action; not in theory.”

Rosemary Martin AwardThis year’s nominations were reviewed by League members Karin Snodgrass, Pamela Eldridge, and community representative Dr. Alan Leis. A plaque listing each year’s honoree hangs in the Naperville Municipal Center.
