Bark for Books
For the week of 2011-10-14
The Naperville Public Library has created a new program this fall called “Bark for Books”. The program provides children who are not comfortable narrating books to read out loud to certified therapy dogs in order to improve their language skills.

Avantika Pandit, a Naperville resident who attended the October session said the dogs “were very kind and they were listening to me.” The dogs can bring a sense of calm to the nervous readers.

“Dogs do not correct, they don’t act bored, they might act a little sleepy but they’re a very good audience for emerging readers to practice their reading,” said Carla Eisley, co-coordinator of the program.

This program will occur monthly at one of the Naperville Public Libraries.
