Naperville Police say compared to recent years there seems to be a slight increase. Most often officers run into people in highly concentrated areas, like downtown and the train stations.
Setting up a tent with personal belongings isn’t allowed in downtown Naperville, but many people pass through the area seeking help. Police will make sure they don’t have any outstanding warrants and then offer them services.
“Whether it’s through a social service here in the community or if they’re just passing through, we try to get them pointed in the right direction,” said Sergeant Gregg Bell. “If they’re in our community they’re a part of this community so we extend whatever assistance we can provide.”
On any given night there are nearly 700 homeless people in DuPage County.
