Greater Naperville Chapter National Charity League

The National Charity League, Inc. (NLC) story began in 1925 when a small group of women founded the organization in Los Angeles. They supported the American Red Cross by making layettes and assembling food baskets. The women engaged their daughters’ support, and by 1938, the daughters formed their own group.

In 1947, both groups united to become the nation’s first mother-daughter philanthropic organization, calling itself “National Charity League.”

NCL expanded its program beyond philanthropic work to include leadership and cultural experiences. In 1958, National Charity League was reorganized and incorporated as two separate organizations: National Charity League, Inc. and National Charity League, Los Angeles Founder Chapter.

More locally, Shauna James and Maureen Thomas recruited Naperville area moms and their daughters to start the first Illinois chapter of the NCL in April of 2012. With a lot of hard work on the part of the initial Board of Directors, the Chapter successfully completed its provisional term and became the 172nd chartered chapter of NCL, Inc. in March 2014.

Marci and Julia Tung talk about the organization and its mission of fostering mother-daughter relationships in a philanthropic organization committed to community service, leadership development and cultural experiences.

The girls are divided into Ticktocker groups by class, so they work together with other girls in their grade level from various schools throughout the Greater Naperville area, planning and attending monthly meetings, enjoying socials, volunteering with each other and/or with their moms, attending cultural events, and creating special memories at our traditional Holiday Tea and at our Recognition Luncheon.

The Patroness moms plan and run their own meetings and socials, volunteer both on their own and with their daughter(s), and also participate in many events with their daughters’ class.

Together, the group supports more than a dozen local organizations including Little Friends, CureSearch for Children’s Cancer, Gigi’s Playhouse, Morton Arboretum, DuPage Senior Citizens Council and Ready, Set, Ride (to name just a few).
